Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is back on a familiar stage.
The 28-year-old will make his fourth career start on Super Bowl Sunday when the Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers at 6:30 p.m. ET in Super Bowl LVIII. Kansas City is in the big game for the fourth time in a five-year span, becoming only the third franchise in National Football League (NFL) history to accomplish that feat. And Mahomes and company will try to become the first organization since the 2003-04 New England Patriots to hoist the Lombardi Trophy in consecutive seasons.
Before then, take a look at how the six-time Pro Bowler has performed in his first three Super Bowl trips, and see the company he can join with another ring.
Mahomes Super Bowl Record, Stats
Kansas City's superstar QB went 2-1 in his first three Super Bowl appearances, throwing for a combined 738 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions to go along with an additional rushing score. Here's a game-by-game breakdown of Mahomes' performances.
Super Bowl LIV vs. 49ers
Result: Chiefs beat 49ers, 31-20.
Statline: 26-of-42 passing, 286 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, 78.1 passer rating, sacked four times, one rushing score, two fumbles.
What Mahomes said postgame: "We never lost faith. That's the biggest thing. Everybody on this team, no one had their head down. We believed in each other. That's what we preached all year long."
The Chiefs trailed the 49ers 21-10 midway through the fourth quarter of Mahomes' Super Bowl debut. But there was no panic on the Kansas City sideline. KC rattled off three consecutive touchdown drives—the last of which was capped off by a 38-yard scoring scamper by running back Damien Williams—to secure Mahomes his first ring and the franchise its first championship in 50 seasons.
Super Bowl LV vs. Buccaneers
Result: Bucs beat Chiefs, 31-9.
Statline: 26-of-49 passing, 270 yards, no passing touchdowns, two interceptions, 52.3 passer rating, sacked three times, one fumble.
What Mahomes said postgame: "Obviously I didn't play the way I wanted to play. What else can you say? All you can do is leave everything you have on the field. I feel like the guys did that...They beat us pretty good, the worst I've been beaten in a long time."
Tom Brady won his seventh and final Super Bowl to spoil Kansas City's last quest at repeating as Super Bowl champs. Mahomes was pummeled by Tampa Bay's pass rush all game, and the Bucs jumped out to a 21-6 lead at halftime in a defacto home game at Raymond James Stadium.
Super Bowl LVII vs. Eagles
Result: Chiefs beat Eagles, 38-35
Statline: 21-of-27 passing, 182 yards, three passing touchdowns, no interceptions, 131.8 passer rating, was not sacked.
What Mahomes said postgame: "It took everybody to win the game."
Another Super Bowl win, another comeback. Mahomes and the Chiefs, in familiar territory, trailed the Eagles by 10 last Super Bowl Sunday. Kansas City reached the end zone on three second-half possessions—including twice on Mahomes touchdown tosses—and the two-time MVP QB set the Chiefs up for a game-winning field goal to take the "Kelce Bowl" for Kansas City's Travis Kelce over his older brother, Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce.
Where Mahomes Ranks in Super Bowl QB History
Mahomes will become the first quarterback in league history to start four Super Bowls before the age of 30, while Brady (10) and John Elway (5) are about to become the only signal-callers remaining all-time with more starts in the game than Kansas City's two-time All-Pro. With a win against the 49ers, Mahomes will join an elite group of starting quarterbacks to win at least three Super Bowls, which to this point includes Brady, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana and Troy Aikman.
In each of Mahomes' first two Super Bowl wins, he earned MVP honors. He is currently tied with Bradshaw, Bart Starr and Eli Manning for the third-most Super Bowl MVPs all-time, and can join Montana in second place with three on Sunday. And yes, Brady leads that category with five.
